Brownies Walk

Brahms6 found this one on 21, November 2010, 25th find.
Well this one had us guessing, the GPSR took us to the right location but when we got in under the trees it started to wander. So Mrs Brahms6 and I spend a long time looking in all the obvious and less obvious places.
After giving up many time and then just having one more look eureka there it was.
This is one of the cleverest hides I have found yet.
the area is along a walk that follows a creek through Southern Cairns. I nice location and a smart hide. We left this one well satisfied.

Fishkebab

Brahms6 found this one on 20, November 2010, 24th find.

Well if you are a local to cairns the location for this one was not hard to work out. So whilst Mrs Brahms6 was shopping I wandered out into the car park where this giant marlin is located and walked around to claim the cache.

Of course if you don't know Cairns your GPSR will bring you straight to the spot. The locals call this the "Fish on a Stick" I am not sure when it went up but I remember the excitement some time in the Early eighties.

The cache was a micro cleverly integrated in to the GZ and I found it quick and easy. A very smart little hide.

If you are interested in Geocaching go to www.geocaching.com and have a look. But remember just like this fellow once you take the bait you are hooked.

The Pines

Brahms6 found this on 20th November 2010, 23rd find.

This is my first find with my new GPSR Garmin 60. As I had been out twice before to find this one with no success I was pretty impressed when the G60 led me straight to it. All I had to do was trust the machine, bend, wiggle and poke to find the Cache. It was a smartly concealed micro.

The location was a very public park with lots of muggles and their mugglettes so I had to be circumspect in my looking. It wasn't to I had made my mistake after signing the log and returning the cache that i realized I hadn't got a photo. I will return yet again to the location and take a photo of the backdrop of pine trees against the mountain.

I enjoyed the challenge of going back and finally solving this one.

Book Worm

Brahms6 found this one on 18th November 2010. 22nd find. Found with "Wazza&Kara"

This was challenging puzzle cache that took us to one of the landmark buildings in the centre of Cairns. The GPSR took us straight to the front of the building.

We then had to follow the paved path around the building answering questions about the mosaic pieces of art built into the path. These artworks give a great pictorial history and are
fascinating to contemplate. I must admit that effect of the white graceful building and the paved artwork was a bit offset by the putrid smell of bat urine that overwhelmed us as we made our way around the path.
But we persevered on like the hardy explorers we wish we were and eventually worked out the last clue.

We headed for the GZ in anticipation but we still had a lot of work to do. Firstly there were muggles everywhere and every time one group left another group came along. We had to scratch around in all the likely spots whilst all the time looking like two innocent middle aged men out for a stroll.
Eventually we found it!!!. The cache held a Geocoin "My Travelling Two cents"

We took it away and on checking it's log found that our task was to log our two cents worth on what peeved us. (you will have to go to the log to find out what my peeve is. We now have to move it on to another cache.

Wazza left a travelbug for the next cachers to take on a trip.

This was a good fun puzzle cache which still left us plenty of work after we found the GZ.

Silhouettes of War

Brahms6 found this one on 18th November 2010. 21st find. Found with "Wazza&Kate".

This was a puzzle cache the file showed us a range of silhouettes of war time aeroplanes and we had to identify them to get the coordinates.

Wazza did all the hard work for this one I just went along with him to find the cache. We spent about ten minutes looking around before we found a very cleverly concealed hide. It was a micro with just enough room for the Log book which we completed.

This monument is situated on the foreshore of the Cairns esplanade and sits in a nicely manicured park.

There were lots of muggles walking and driving past so we had to be very tricky in retrieving and replacing the hide.

Some people are so clever when making up hides for their caches.

We placed one of our previously found geocoins "Looking for Clues" into this cache as we were asked to find a puzzle cache and this certainly was a puzzle.

Brahms6 Concerto No.3 Thursday Island

Well I couldn't leave Thursday Island without hiding a cache. I went prepared with a Micro cache and found the perfect place for it to highlight the history of the place. The cache is overlooked by the impressive monument on the grave of Queensland's 7th Premier who is buried on Thursday Island.

There are also graves of many other dignitaries involved in the history of TI. If you go looking for it give yourself plenty of time to wander around and discover some of the history. To find the coordinates go to www.geocaching.com and search for "Brahms6 Concerto No.3" Good luck and happy caching on TI.

The Russians are Coming

Brahms6 found this one 16th November 2010, 20th find.

This cache is hidden amongst the old fort that was built on Thursday Island to guard against the Russians. The remains of the fort are impressive and give you 360 degree view of the Straits and the surrounding Islands.

Worth the early morning climb just to see it. Next time I will be up there before the sun comes up and and watch it rise over the Islands.

Thursday island has an impressive history and the fort is only a part of it, if you get a chance you have to go see for your self.

The cache itself was tricky as it was not in any of the obvious locations but a hot, extended search turned it up. This was traditional cache with SWAG and a Travelbug.
This travelbug was attached to a pair of army vehicles and the stated objectives are to travel from military base to military base to to highlight the affects of war on people. It has a second objective to travel to Russia and Iceland. I don't think you can get much further from Iceland then Cape York Peninsular weather wise. It was released in Colorado in November 2009 and has now travelled 15,635.7 Kilometers.
As I am not going to Russia or Iceland in the near future and there does not seem to be any caches near our military bases in cairns I will have to create one so look out for further posts.

I signed the log, enjoyed the view and left behind a plastic pistol and thong keyring.

This was the second of only two caches on Thursday Island so I the set off to hide my own.

Wind Power Thursday Island

Brahms6 found this one on 16th November 2010, 19th find.

This is the view I had sitting on top of the cache hiding spot just below the giant windmills that feed power to Thursday Island. Even though I left early in the morning I still worked up a sweat finding the cache.
The scenery was absolutely glorious and I envied the people having their early morning exercise even though the hill was mighty steep.
I enjoyed sitting there filling out the log and looking out over the Torres Straits. It takes your breath away.
The cache was a traditional cache with SWAG. The cache also had a geocoin that I took to move on.

This coin started its journey in Michigan and had travelled over 23,500 Kilometers when I found it. Its mission is to continue to travel so I will move it on to a place around Cairns. Perhaps a southern or international tourist will find it and take it.
I left a small plastic Yo Yo and a Donkey.
A great cache in a beautiful place.

Brahms6 Concerto No.2 Umagico

15th November 2010 On a recent trip for work up to the Northern Peninsular Area of Far North Queensland I took the opportunity to hide my second cache.

This cache is a another micro and it is hidden in the Alau Beach foreshore, Umagico. You can get to this area three ways:

Drive in from the south, this will take you a few days and is a beautiful drive through some of Queensland remotest country. Of course you can only do it in the dry. You can fly into Bamaga and get a lift to Umagico or you can take the ferry from Thursday Island.
The country is red and the bush is lush with the beach being along the western edge of Cape York Peninsular. The people are friendly and welcoming. The fishing is some of the best in Queensland but look out for the big saltwater lizards

If you want the coordinates for the cache you will have to go to www.geocaching.com and look up "Brahms6 Concerto No. 2"

Past Packers

Brahms6 Found this one on 14th November 2010, 18th find.

This was another find that took us to an area we hadn't seen before. We had to fight off the mosquitoes to get this one.

A great cache well disguised and hidden with lots of SWAG inside. Took a plastic shark and left a small spinning top and of course signed the log.

This was a natural setting that will love the camera. I will be going back to get some Black and White shots.

Great Wall Great Fence

Brahms6 Found this one on 17th November 2010, 17th find,

This small cache was quite an easy one to locate. the challenge was getting to it. The parking was difficult and we ended up partially across the driveway of a muggle who came home just as I was retrieving the cache. Mrs Brahms6 had to stay in the car with the motor running for quick maneuvering.

Find the cache, signed the log and moved on quickly. TFTC

Camels in the Sand

Brahms6 found this one on the 14th November 2010. 16th find.
This was a well concealed hide built into the infrastructure in which it was hidden. It took a little climbing and a search fro the inner child. The dogs bounced around in the sand below me and barked at me to come down.
I signed the log and made my escape before the muggles came out to see what all the noise was.
Camel regularly puts up great hides and they are always a bit of a task to find even when you get the coordinates right. TFTC

Bridge over the River Camel

Brahms6 found this on 14th November 2010 at 08:50. 15th find.
I had headed down to the shops to get the paper and the makings for Sunday brunch. I got there a bit early and the shops weren't open so I went looking for this cache to fill in the time.

This was a good cache hidden on one of the walking paths that encircle our area. A nice gentle walk amongst the rainforest following the creek the whole way round.

The Cache was well hidden and guarded by spiders. Isn't there something like that in "Lord of the Rings"

As you can see the River Camel is actually one of our local creeks. A little sit on the bridge to listen to the water and write up the log and back to Sunday Brunch.

Took a little Blue Dinosaur and left a plastic cow.

Brahms6 Concerto No.1

Well folks after 14 finds I thought it was time to hide a cache of my own. So I did.

Brahms6 Concerto No. 1 is hidden at S 17 Degrees 00.829 E 145 Degrees 42.999. It is a Micro cache hence a concerto not a symphony. Hidden on 07th November 2010, three cachers have found it so far.

Have fun searching

The Exercise Yard

The Exercise Yard; found 09th November 2010. Found with "Wazza&Kara".

Well I must say I got a bit nervous about this one and Wazza dragged me off to look for it. Now don't get me wrong, I love exercise, when I am watching someone else doing it. but for me it is a grossly overrated pastime.

There are only three forms of exercise for me.

1. How many elbow bends I can do with a glass of red as a counterbalance.

2. Casting lures from the Kayak

3. Taking a leisurely stroll looking for geocaches.

So a whole yard dedicated to exercise, I think not. But he persevered and we were well rewarded not only did he do the bending and stretching to retrieve and replace the cache but we got to just stand and look out to sea. In case you haven't worked it out this is one of the most beautiful places in Queensland.

We did get a bit windswept when the rescue chopper came in over our heads to land at the hospital helipad. "Muggles in the sky" was not something I had expected to contend with.

This cache was a cleverly concealed little micro cache with room for a log.

Dead Centre of Cairns

Dead Centre of Cairns; found 09th November 2010, 13th find. Found with "Wazza&Kara"

I think an old cemetery is one of the best places for a cache. You find yourself walking through history embedded in stone.

This cache was hidden just off the cemetery in a stand of trees that have been in the area for a long, long time. The combination of this very old but living stand of trees and the old stone memorials was very evocative.

The Cache itself was an easy find and obviously a popular one as there is now a well worn track to it. Took the key chain and left a wristband and a pen. Thanks for the cache "Yarrum".

W.A.M. is on the job

W.A.M. On the job; Found 09th November 2011. 12th find
Found with "Wazza&Kara"

Took a quick break from work at lunch time and ducked around the corner to find this one. An interesting cache hidden in plain sight.

This one had a stinger in the tail, well not in actuality but it was always there right up until you opened the cache. We left a wristband a balloon and a pen. I took the nifty little red turbocar pictured here. Wazza and Kara took a keyring.
I liked the little story that went along with this cache to build up the picture of where and what we were looking for. It was exciting to note that a fellow cacher who had traveled to Cairns on the cruise ship Amsterdam had taken the time to find the cache the night before. The ship was steaming out along the channel as we were searching.

Camels Nest

Camels Nest Found 7th November 2010, @ 14:59 (first stage) and 15:29 (cache) My 11th find.

I was very pleased to find this one today as I had been looking for it before with no luck. I had spent a good 30 minutes looking for the first stage and this time it took me about 5 minutes to find it. I think the lesson I learned at "Pining on the Wall in the Forest" helped me with this.

The first stage was a small container that gave the coordinates for the cache. This stage was in a nice secluded little park that I did not know existed. (geocaching is certainly a great way to find all the nice and unusual locations).

I decided to walk on to the second coordinates. It was a bit further then I had anticipated.

Well at least the way I went was.

I suspect there is a short cut but I don't mind as I got to see a little more of the area.

The actual cache was not too difficult to find it was in scrub land behind a row of houses. I sort of crashed around in the scrub looking under rocks and timber until I saw a place that seemed all to obvious. I looked anyway and there it was.

The cache had a load of little trinkets in it and I took a little blue plastic seahorse, I added a plastic wristband and a pad of postit notes.

The cache was a bit wet but I filled in the log and have made a post on the Geocaching site to let the owner know. This is the second one of "Camels" hides that I have found and I have enjoyed both of them. My very first find was "Camels Playing Bridge" Thanks Camel I will be looking for more of yours.

Walking the Planks

Walking the Planks Found 7th November 2010 @ 14:38 My 10th find.

Whoo hoo Brahms6 is now into double figures.

This was a great puzzle cache. The original coordinates took us to the first location. We then had to count, add, subtract and divide to get the second set of coordinates. I, my wife (I am a bit nervous about calling her the Geowife) and the Geodogs counted away and the four of us got the same count.

So we found the second coordinates and the hunt was on. Again I found myself rolling around in the dirt and leaves and feeling around in dark place.

Eventually I found the little magnetic container with the log in it. I should mention here that the Geodogs had given up on the search quite a while before I did.

I enjoyed the spot and even though it is in the middle of suburbia and on a path through a park the creek edged with rain forest was beautiful. Spotted a fantastic iridescent blue Ulysses Butterfly. The colour takes your breath away and they are such show offs fluttering around to make sure they catch the sun. This was the second find for the day and we were on a roll. Thanks "Spinmeout" we enjoyed this one.

Pining on the Wall in the Forest

Pining on the Wall in the Forest Found 07 November 2010 @ 13:42 my 9th find.

This was listed as a simple DIDO that is Drive in Drive out. So it was for every one but me. We parked the car and walked to the obvious spot and then the next obvious spot and then the next .......you get the picture.

I stuck my arm into all the dark and creepy places and came up empty. Eventually I walk back to the car lent against it, had a think and the went back to the search and lo and behold there it was exactly where and how it was supposed to be.

I think I will sack my GPS it wanted to send me across the road.

A nice cache I took a little yellow plastic centipede and left a green pen and a yellow wristband. This was a good find to set up the rest of my afternoon. It taught me a lesson. Don't be so anal about the GPS Coordinates. Use your head and your eyes. Thanks for this one "StopTheWorld". This one was hidden in June 2007 and is still going strong.

Beloved Son

Beloved Son Found 03 November 2010 @ 16:20 found with "Wazza&Kara" my 8 Th find

This cache was well hidden in a very old part of Cairns city. It was good to walk through and examine all the old monuments to people long gone. The history is fantastic.
Yet another place that I would not have thought of visiting without being prompted by the geocachers.

We took away a small trinket necklace for Kara and a Geocoin and left a balloon and a nylon wristband.

The Geocoin has a tracking number and a request for us to reposition it in another multi or puzzle cache so that is what we will do. I logged the coin on the Geocaching Tracker site. I hope I did it right

The coin pictured here is shaped like a magnifying glass and is drawn from Sherlock Holmes. it even has "Elementary My Dear Watson" printed on it. I am now thinking about what my coin could look like. I am also wondering what the form is around coins. Does one choose design for oneself and then stick with it or do you just purchase what you can find off the shelf. I shall do some Sherlocking and find out.

Holy Ship

Holy Ship found 01 November 2010 12:16 Cache number 7 for me and number 1 for "Wazza&Kara"

This is a great cache the best I have found yet. Great clues and massive amount of work in placing and disguising the cache. I went with "Wazza&Kara" to find this one in our lunch break.

We had the added bonus of eyeballing the luxury ship at the wharf. I think the security guy thought we were a bit odd as we wandered around in our search

There are some smart and handy cachers out there.

I am going to go looking for more of this persons caches.

Windy Hill

Windy Hill found 01 st November 2010 @ 14:59 6th find

Wow I love this place. I have been fascinated by the wind farm every time I drive past. I always stop for rest and a walk around.
What a surprise to find out that this cache has been there all the time. Well hidden but easy to find , great clue.
The wind turbines are awesome in the middle of a undulating green paddock. Nature generating energy. I find them so hypnotic. It would be so easy to spend a long time just watching the wheels go round.
